On gift, holding, and the love that does not rent
God does not become, and the world is gift, not debt. It could have not been; once it is, it is held by the same gesture, not by a second one. God does not need you. That is why He can hold you without using you, can will you, can delight in you, and can call you by name without filling a lack in Himself. You are not allowed to use anyone in order to appear whole.
Between these sentences there is not a mood, but a prohibition and a permission. To believe does not mean to build an inner world easier to carry. It means not inventing a second reality in order to escape the first, and remaining in the first long enough to love it. Need is not relation. Giving is not lack. Use is the idol that mixes them. Joy is not need, and calling by name is not recognition demanded. Everything begins here: not from an exhortation, but from a boundary.
Fullness
If God is complete, nothing is missing that the world might bring Him. He does not wait for recognition as for food, does not know Himself through us as through a mirror without which He would remain blind, and does not come to completion through history. Fullness is not a void that asks to be filled: it is already all. That is why creation, if it is, is overflow: it gives a world owed to no one. The world’s being held does not complete Him, and neither does His will concerning it. A gesture that is already all can still will this particular thing, delight in it, and call it. Joy is not the sign of a lack that has stopped. It is fullness unashamed of a particular face, a particular place, a particular name.

A distinction must be kept here, and everything that follows rests on it. That He gives Himself does not mean that something is missing in Him. That the world stands before Him does not mean that He makes use of it. Relation can be real without being food, and without being only empty space. Whoever confuses giving with need has made love into heaven’s duty toward its own void. Whoever, for fear of that confusion, empties relation of will, of joy, and of name has made fullness into non-touch — and non-touch is an idol as well.
Here nearly everything that passes for piety breaks. Any speech about God in which He has need — of worship, of the cross, of history, of your recognition — has set a master over fullness and has ceased to speak of Him. Need is the modern name of the idol. You can dress it in tenderness and say: “God loves you so much that He cannot do without you.” The sentence sounds like consolation, but it is a degradation. A God who cannot do without you no longer holds you. He uses you so that He will not come apart.
The world is not His step, not a mirror He would need, not material for drama, not a means. If it were, fullness would already be broken. That the world could have not been is not a schoolroom detail: it is the condition of the gift. What could not have failed to be is not given; it is inevitable. And the inevitable, once lifted into heaven, becomes an instrument.
That is why He holds by the same gesture, not by a second. The two-storey scheme is the constant temptation: a gesture that creates and another that repairs; a nature left fragile and a grace that intervenes to save the honor of the first gesture; a permission and, later, a plan. This dualism falls back into becoming even when it wants to guard the gift. God does not become. The world, once it is, is not transferred onto another path. Holding is not divine fatigue. It is the same gesture, without lack.
Forbidden: to make of God a void that requires you.
Permitted: the giving that does not feed on you — and will, joy, calling by name, which are not void.
Freedom and the wound
The creature’s freedom is real precisely because it does not serve the source as a means. A gift that serves the One who gives has ceased to be a gift. The sentence is hard for any piety that makes man the price of glory. Glory that needs you is not glory. It is exchange. The surrender of the will produces power; that is why it is not the sign of love, but a temptation.
The bread and the table
A man gave bread to someone hungry. He did not lack bread. He did not lack a table. He did not lack someone to praise him. He broke and held it out. Then he was silent.
The hungry man ate. Afterward he asked:
— What do I owe you?
— Nothing, the other said. If you owe me, you did not receive bread. You received a step.
The hungry man grew angry. The gift seemed cold to him. He wanted to be necessary. He wanted the bread to keep the giver in being, so that he too would have a place in the story. He set the piece at the end of the table and said:
— I eat only if you cannot do without me.
Then the bread became rent. It no longer held hunger. It held an exchange.
A third came as well. He ate. He rose. He washed the table. He sang, not to fill the house — the house was full — but because he had eaten. He remained at the door when the other left. Not as a price. As a face.
The giver did not become more whole. He did not become emptier either. The first hungry man had served the gift: he had made bread into the step of the giver’s glory. The third served after the gift: he answered, and the bread remained bread.
Whoever asks which service is love asks wrongly. One belongs to the bread: if it serves the one who gives it, it was not given. One belongs to the mouth: if it pays the one who gave, the mouth has turned the gift into a tax. The table stands between them. It can be washed. One cannot claim that, without the washing, the giver dies of hunger.
He gave bread without lacking a table. Whoever knelt in order to keep the giver in being turned the gift into rent. Whoever knelt because he had eaten served without paying. The same knee, two services; only one left the gift a gift.
Not everything that bends is surrender, and not all surrender is service. The bending that remains a face is answer. The bending that makes itself matter is temptation.
The same gesture that holds the world does not write it in advance as a closed text. Holding is not absorption. If it were, the gift would cancel itself in the moment it is given. Freedom is event: it can consent, refuse, wander, remain. That risk was not already consumed in the first gesture like a play whose ending is known and therefore innocent. A gesture that holds without using leaves room precisely because it does not need a result.
The will remains. You can refuse. You can wander. You can remain. If service were the surrender that extinguishes the will, it would again be exchange: I give you myself so that You may stay whole.
Evil can be permitted without being necessary to God. The necessity of evil for His being is an idol — pious, often, and therefore harder to recognize. Under omniscience, “I allowed” draws near to “I willed it so.” The distinction is not saved by shrinking power. A smaller God is not more innocent; He is only less God. Nor is it saved by claiming that freedom was already written and therefore cost nothing. The distinction is held otherwise: fullness does not need a wound, and created freedom can still wound. The two sentences stand together. If you pull them apart, either you make evil a step of heaven, or you make man a shadow of the gesture that holds him.
Value is vulnerable, and yet dogma holds it. Otherwise fullness falls back into a craft of souls: evil as lesson, the wound as material of holiness, history as a story that had to hurt so that He might come out whole. One does not choose here between duty and fruit. What is forbidden is only the justification of the lie and of the wound as His step. The healing at the end, if it is, heals. It does not sanctify the means. Whoever makes suffering a step of fullness has lied twice: about the wound and about Him. The first lie is easier to forgive in a sermon. The second is graver. A heaven that needs hell in order to be heaven has ceased to be fullness.
Learn to fly in the fall. Novelty in the creature, not repair of heaven
The fall can teach. It does not sanctify the means. Flight from the fall is an event in the world: a forgiveness that was not, a word that cuts a lie, a hand that remains. It is not the repaired honor of the first gesture. It is not proof that the source was incomplete and therefore required the blow. Holding is not monotony. A gesture that is already all can still begin, below, what was not — without claiming that the wound “had to be.”
Novelty is in the creature. It is not the storey that repairs the honor of the first gesture. The fall can teach. It does not sanctify the means.
Forbidden: to make evil necessary to Him; novelty as repair of an incomplete first gesture.
Permitted: to hold the wound as wound, without lifting it into heaven — and freedom as risk, without swallowing it into the first gesture; real beginnings in the world that is held.
Incarnation, the cross, the end
Incarnation, if it is true, is a free entry into a particular. Particularity is gift, not means. The assumed body is a body fullness did not need. That is why the touch is not climate and is not metaphor: it is place. A God who becomes man in order to fill a lack in Himself has not come. He has used.
The cross is not God’s engine. It does not make Him, does not wake Him, does not add something He lacked. It can be the consequence of a real freedom in a world that is held, not required. It can be judgment. It cannot be read as the mystery of a divine lack. To make the wound His step is to lie about Him. To lie about the wound in order to protect Him is to lie about both.
The wound is not lifted. One does not say “it had to be.” Hell is not made a step of heaven. Silence that does not rewrite is permitted. Silence that leaves the wound without a name, so that it will not look like a step, is drying.
What remains, if not lack? Place and face. A particular body, a particular death, a judgment that discloses, not a spectacle that justifies all that preceded it. Holding goes as far as light: body, memory, relation, assumed wound — held and lit, not erased as the price of purity. A theism that holds fullness without the particular has chosen non-touch. A theism that holds the particular as a step of fullness has chosen the idol. The one that remains holds both: fullness and this face, this wound, this resurrection.
There is a piety that protects heaven by rewriting earth. It says: it was not quite so bad; it had a meaning; it was allowed so that a greater good might come out. Hope is not allowed to do that. It may be silent. It may wait. It cannot install a second world in which the wound “was not.” The end, if it is named, is gift arrived at transparency: resurrection, a new heaven, judgment as disclosure. Salvation does not feed Him. It is not an exchange in which man completes heaven. It does not dissolve the person. A paradise that requires forgetting as the ticket of entry has chosen the second gesture. It has invented a second reality.
Forbidden: to read incarnation and the cross as the filling of a lack.
Permitted: the particular held as far as light, without rewriting the wound.
Truth is the beginning of the Way
Truth is not one virtue among others. It is the heart’s test. What you set above it when reality costs — that rules you: fear, pride, group, interest, rest, appetite, identity as immortality. As a sentence about the first world, it stands: truth is beginning. Whoever makes it a sign of recognition for the group has placed it under the group. The way that begins with truth remains a way only so long as it does not give birth to a false belief from which the other then works. When “truth” is the password at the door, it is no longer beginning. It is binder.
Truth is beginning, not password. Whoever makes it a sign of the group has placed it under the group. Blind faith is demanded by hunger, not by fullness. The test shows. The decree that pretends to be a test has invented. Miracle is not ground.
Ignorance is not a lie, and error is not a lie. A lie is the willed birth of a false belief from which the other works. A God worthy of trust may be silent, may disclose gradually, may speak in symbol, parable, mystery. He does not invent the false as a means. Unlimited power does not make deception more justified. It makes it less necessary. Whoever justifies deception by the greatness of the end has said, in fact, that fullness is not enough.
We do not ask for blind faith
Permitted only as test. Fullness does not require blindness. Hunger does. The test shows. The decree that pretends to be a test has invented. “We show you the power” is not an argument; it is pressure. Whoever confuses miracle with ground has said that truth is not enough. Whoever demands blind faith in order to hold the union has bought it with a second reality.
Silence in its time, mercy, and responsibility are faces of truth. If the right time never arrives, it was not the right time. If care always postpones, care is evasion. Justice without mercy is cruelty; cruelty does not serve truth, it counterfeits it. You can serve reality against the group and still choose an inverse master. Cruelty easily pretends to be fidelity.
Here the temptation of this word also falls. The prohibition can become a blade without a body. You can refuse the second gesture so as no longer to owe mercy. You can make silence a principle and purity a new master. You can guard fullness like a watchman who no longer looks at a face. Then you have not guarded fullness. You have replaced the idol of need with the idol of non-touch. The guardian of fullness and the witness of a face are not two offices. If the cutting does not stop before the body, before the word in its time, before the mercy that does not lie, the prohibition has become empty asceticism. Truth that can no longer touch has ceased to be truth of the first world.
A faith is, before doctrines, an ordering of time. It sets in a person patience or panic, duty or evasion, hope or grandeur. The future it promises begins to form those who believe it. Then they defend that future when evidence costs. Religions and atheisms stand under the same test. Doctrines are not ranked here. What is recognized is the relation to the first world.
A good atheism is not empty. It is responsibility without a guarantee from above: to bury, to forgive, to hold the community, without lying consolation. It does not praise unbelief. It forbids the consolation that lies. A bad atheism invents a second world as well: historical inevitability, the species as immortality, emptiness as superiority. A bad theism is full. It is full of a second gesture, of a second world, of a wound rewritten as a step. A good theism is not merely emptied of need. It holds fullness and the particular: body, memory, judgment as disclosure, a name that is not a step. Tradition can carry memory, order, duty. It cannot make belonging the master of truth.
The test is one for both: what stands above truth when reality costs. Theism is not judged only by the idol of need, nor atheism only by honesty. Each is judged by the second reality it installs — or by the refusal of one.
Forbidden: to give birth to a false belief as a means; to make “truth” a password.
Permitted: silence, mercy, and justice that do not evade one another; the test, not the decree.
In the house
Masters live in the body as well. Renunciation hurts. Shame is a death among people. Rest avoids what it does not want to see. To speak the truth is an event of the body too, not only of the mind. Under the masters there often stands the fear of death — not only bodily death: failure, abandonment, the loss of mastery, of meaning, of others’ memory. Work, art, children, people, idea, the unstained self are not lies in themselves. They become idols when the hidden aim is to keep us from the fact that we are mortal. Asceticism is the small death of self-defense, not the spectacle of holiness. Spectacle-holiness is a new master. Finitude is not the enemy of fullness. It is the place where the gift can be received without being stolen as immortality.
Appearance does not count, but the spirit
The face is not a step of the image. The spirit is not bought with the mask. That does not require you to empty the body. It requires you not to rent the gaze. Whoever keeps his house by what is seen has made the neighbor a mirror. Whoever despises the body in order to appear spirit has used his own cleanliness. The particular is place, not costume. The child held as presence is not the same as the child held as proof that you have not lived in vain. The spouse loved as a face is not the mirror that keeps you in being. The parishioner served is not the matter of your sermon. Another’s suffering looked at is not the step of your depth. Every gesture of use says the same thing: fullness is not enough for me; I need a price.
If He holds you without using you, using the other in order to appear whole is a counterfeit of the same fullness. If He can will you and call you without feeding on you, your love can will and call without demanding from the other the ticket of your completion. Dogma does not ask you not to love. It forbids you to make love into the other’s duty toward your void. Hold, do not use. It is the same logic, descended from heaven into the house. Love that does not demand filling is not poorer. It is the only love that can still look at a face without turning it into a step.
The thirst of the mouth is real. It is not a title over a face. You can ask for bread without claiming that the source is hungry. The attachment that makes a face the regulator of the self, so that you will not come apart, is use. Cutting the attachment so as no longer to depend is distance. The third: touch that does not rent.
Forbidden: to make of the neighbor your step.
Permitted: to love without asking the other to fill your void.
Gathering, power, the together
The same logic stretches from God to everything that gathers people and orders their time. The more someone knows and can, the less the permission of foreseen evil is accident. It is form. The test is one: what stands above truth when reality costs.
The Church is the most exposed case, not the only one. It can make need into liturgy. It tells a person that heaven is incomplete without his gesture, then gives the gesture back as grace. It can also hold: memory, body, name, judgment — without making them the price of glory. The state can make fear a binder. It does not always lie like a preacher. It orders time. It sets panic or evasion. Places that sell recognition keep the void open. They need not fill it. It is enough to feed it.
Do not seek wickedness in the neighbor, lest it make a place in your house
Wickedness sought in the other in order to keep your house clean is use. Spectacle-justice makes its matter from the face beside you. This is not an exhortation to blindness. It is the prohibition against building your holiness from another’s guilt. No gathering has the right to give birth to a false belief as binder. Union bought with a lie rots. It rots slowly, and therefore looks like fruit. The word that serves the group against reality has chosen a master. The word that serves reality against the group must remain merciful. Otherwise it has chosen cruelty as an inverse master.
The gift falls on a together. A people is the body of a promise, not a step. Land is place, not argument. The stopped day is the order of the world that is, not a second world. Descent is memory, not immortality. Not owing the nation can be justice. No longer keeping memory is forgetting. Forgetting that pretends to be purity has invented a second life.
Form — what is eaten, what is left unsaid, what is kept, what is let go — is not a lie by being form. It is a lie when it gives birth to a false belief as binder. It is gift when it holds the face, the table, the dead. Mercy goes before the rule. Rule without mercy makes a person a step of order. Mercy without form does not hold. To entrust yourself is not to give yourself as matter. It is to remain a face, held, not used.
Form holds the world that is: table, city, argument, debate, day, the name of the dead. It is not a Way. It becomes a Way when it gives birth to a false belief as binder. To cut form so that it will not look like cult is the other idol.
Whoever can more, his permission is form, not accident. Law, border, force, tax, prison — all hold or use. Union bought with fear or with a second reality — the necessary enemy, inevitable history, the people as immortality — rots. Force that stops a blow holds the first world. Force that gives birth to a false belief as binder makes the body a step of order.
Forbidden: union bought with a second reality; people, land, rule, or trust as a step; the lying binder.
Permitted: the gathering that holds the first world; the together as the body of a promise; force that stops the blow; the rule after mercy.
Why dogma begins with fullness
Speech about a God who has need is grave not because it is impolite. It is grave because it changes the nature of the gift. A God who holds you in order to complete Himself has not given you to yourself. He has rented you existence. A person who holds the neighbor in order to appear whole does the same thing at a small scale. It is not a moral coincidence. It is the same mystery of being, guarded or betrayed.
That is why dogma begins with fullness, not with ethics. Without a God already complete, the prohibition against using is only a taste, a preference, a sensibility of the age. With fullness, the prohibition is the consequence: you are not allowed to make anyone your step, because you are not His step either. With fullness, the permission is also the consequence: you can love without demanding, because He loves without feeding.
Hope, if it is, does not rewrite the facts. It does not say of the wound that it was not. It does not make hell a step of heaven. It does not require forgetting as the price of peace. It holds the first world — the one that could have not been and that, once it is, is held by the same gesture. It also holds the particular of this world: the face, memory, judgment as disclosure. Without them, fullness falls back into non-touch. With them made into a step, it falls back into need.
He does not need you. That is why He can hold you without using you. That is why He can will you. That is why He can delight. That is why He can call. The rest is the temptation to invent a second gesture, a second world, a second face — His or yours — that would justify use.
Answer, the form of the day, place
Answer is not payment. You can praise without filling. You can cry out without waking a lack. You can keep a day and a table without lifting them as a price. When answer is made a step, it has become food. When not, it remains answer. Whoever mixes them cuts either the gift or the truth. Whoever cuts everything that resembles need dries even what was not need.
The creature does not complete the One. Service is answer, not payment. The analogy descends: He holds without using, therefore you make no one a step.
Bowing, the table in its time, the kept word, shame before a face hold the world that is when they do not invent another. A son can refrain from using his father without a high principle. Form is of clay. It breaks. Until then it holds. The common table is the clear gathering: bread, hunger, the dead remembered. Service washes without making the one washed into depth. To remain for the other is the law as duration. To remain only under a principle makes the principle a crutch. To remain in order to be seen makes mercy a step.
The particular is not a single chosen threshold. If it is gift, it is gift here: the spring, the grave, the name of the place. To hold one place and empty the others is not holding. It is privileging. House, work, the measure placed in the hand are not proof that life was worth it. They are what is held. Flight into the general leaves the particular unspoken. The dead person is not a second world by dying. He is the memory of the world that is. His face, table, name hold what the body asks. A story is false when it gives birth to belief as binder. Memory is not a false story.
To take what was — without “it was good” — does not require an Addressee. One buries, one forgives, one keeps the table, one looks at the day. Feast, friendship, art are answer without address. Echo if they do not demand immortality. Masters if they cover death.
Burial, forgiveness, the table, without “it is better there,” hold the first world even without a Name. That is permitted. It is not the same thing as having a source.
Forbidden: to make answer into coin; form as a false binder; service as a mirror; one place held against all places; the dead as immortality; to claim that only under a Name is what is held.
Permitted: praise, the cry, the table, form that holds the face; place; memory, not coin; assumption; friendship; art — answer, not immortality.
Suffering, thirst, not using yourself
The wound is not the whole word of suffering. Suffering is also recurrence: hunger returns, the body wears, the bond breaks. Not lifting the wound as a step does not mean turning it into an accident without texture. Whoever sees only the blow demands a lesson. Whoever sees the texture can unbind without sanctifying. Evil is not a shadow. It ruins, repeats, gathers, asks for binder. To call it power is not to make it necessary to the One who holds. To thin it until it disappears leaves the wound without a name. One fights without sanctifying the means. One loses without saying that the loss was a step.
A story is not a second world by having a beginning and an end. It is a second world when it rewrites the wound: it was not; it had to be; one sees why. It is holding when it says what was and does not erase. Thirst belongs to the mouth. Lifted into the other, it makes him food. Refused so as not to touch him, it makes distance. To ask of the mouth the language of the One without lack is to ask a human being not to be human. The cry belongs to the wound. Silence in its time remains. Silence as principle is a master. The cry as principle is the inverse master. Play stands without serving. Whoever will not allow it has added a duty.
Not using is kept in the body. It is not enough not to make a child proof, a spouse a mirror, the one in front of you matter. The mouth, haste, justice that displays itself, asceticism that is seen — these too use. Whoever does not touch himself has chosen cleanliness as master. Not feeding on your own non-use is the same law. If it hurts only others, it was rank. Gentleness does not weaken the law. Water wears without victory. What does not serve — flower, play, feast without recruitment — is not evasion. It is the gift without instrument. Long illness, wear, sex, work that wrings, the mind that breaks — there lack is not metaphor. Help is form. Spectacle-independence is inverse rank.
Forbidden: suffering as a step; evil as necessary to completion; the story that sanctifies the means; thirst made into the other’s hunger; cleanliness as spectacle; the holiness of weakness; the holiness of autonomy.
Permitted: suffering as texture; the story that holds the facts; the cry in its time; play; not using yourself; care; pleasure that does not recruit.
The same law, held below
Whoever holds without using leaves room for the same holding. That is why a people can be promise, not step. That is why the rule can follow mercy. That is why a place can be held without feeding. That is why trust does not make you coin. That is why play stands, the cry stands, the table stands, and one remains — even when the name is silent. The temptation is double: a second world that justifies use, or the cutting of every answer, so that it will no longer resemble food.
Do not require forgetting. Do not sanctify the means. Do not make love the other’s duty toward your void. Do not take distance for purity. Do not take answer for payment. Hold what is — people, land, day, the dead, mouth, play, table — without lifting it and without leaving it without form.
The avoidances are not an add-on. They are the places where the cut, left alone, turns again into a master.
Fullness does not speak as a mouth. People speak. The word that says “I want you,” “your absence hurts me,” “return” can be true of a relation and still false if it is lifted as the structure of the source. Jealousy, weeping, “I cannot do without” are faces of created attachment. You can hold them as the language of finitude. You make them an idol when you claim that fullness is built the same way.
If fullness is already complete, it does not wait for the world in order to have someone to sit with. Giving can be inward: not a void that requires a second, but a fullness that is not a frozen monologue. The third way: it is already relation, therefore it can will a particular without completing itself through it. The world is not the first dialogue. It is a dialogue that could have not been.
Sometimes a particular body, a particular death, a particular judgment changes what can be seen. Not because the source lacked an engine. Because freedom struck in the world that is held, and holding does not withdraw the blow as a staging error. The event does not justify all that preceded it. It discloses. It holds the wound as wound and still does not leave it the last word — not by rewriting, but by a deed that follows, visible, dated.
The wanderer turns aside and is forgiven; he returns
Turning aside is a deed. Return is a deed. Using someone as a step is one form. It is not the whole form of evil. There is the deed that has ruined and knows it has ruined. There is the debt toward the one struck, not toward your clean image. Forgiveness is the ceasing to hold the other as the object of your duty to appear whole — and, on the side of the one who struck, the ceasing to claim that the wound “had a meaning.” Confession is saying what was. It is not coin. It does not buy a second life. Wandering held as wound can be unbound. Wandering sanctified as a step of the Way has lied twice.
You are not fullness. You are hungry. You tear. You want to be held. The distinction does not ask you to mime fullness. Your lack is not a title over the face beside you. You can ask for help. You cannot make help the proof that your existence was worth it. Below, need is real; below, use remains a lie. Not because you are already full. Because the other is not the material of your fullness.
At the bedside, not: it was not; it had to be; one sees why; it is better there. Yes: you are here; it hurts; I am not leaving; we keep the name; the table remains. Hope that does not lie does not install an adjoining room. It installs duration. The word that consoles without inventing is narrow and enough.
How it is known: not from a decree. From what happens when you set something else above truth: the face breaks, the word breaks, the gathering breaks. The test is public. Fullness is not demonstrated here as a theorem. It is the hypothesis that makes the prohibition against using more than a taste. If you reject it, you can still keep the rule below — as responsibility without guarantee. That is permitted. It is not the same thing as having a source.
Not asking the other to fill you is not loving from a distance. It is standing near without turning him into proof. You can want an answer. The answer is gift, not wages. You can be wounded by refusal. The wound is a wound, not an argument that fullness was owed you through him. The same two falls — making him food, or no longer touching him so as to stay clean. The third: touch that does not rent.
The same table is memory for one, recruitment for another. The criterion is not belonging. It is whether it gives birth to a false belief as binder and whether it makes a person a step. This judgment is tempted as well: it can become a blade. That is why it stops before the body, before the time of the word, before the mercy that does not lie.
Forbidden: to read human thirst as the structure of what holds; to make the world the condition that fullness not be alone; to make the blow into food; to reduce all evil to the idol of use; to make forgiveness a ticket of erasure; to turn finitude into unfeeling asceticism; consolation that births an adjoining room; distance as purity.
Permitted: the warm word held below; an already full inwardness; a fact that discloses without claiming that the wound “had to be”; guilt as deed; forgiveness as ceasing; to ask, to receive, to hold — without a ticket; presence; to want, to be refused, to remain.
The premise and its absence
God is complete, not becoming. He does not complete Himself through the world, worship, the cross, history, or your recognition. Creation is overflow, not debt. Holding is the same gesture, not a second storey. Relation can be real — will, joy, calling by name — without being food. Here classical theism fits, read against the piety that says “He cannot do without you.” Incarnation and the cross, if they are held, are free particularity, not the engine of fullness. The end is transparency of the first world, not an adjoining room in which the wound “was not.”
The cost is that two sentences that rub against each other must be held. Fullness does not need a wound; created freedom can still wound. If you weaken the first, you fall back into the idol of need. If you weaken the second, you fall back into shadow. A second cost: scriptural and liturgical speech is full of thirst, jealousy, “return.” With the premise, all of this must be held below — language of finitude or analogy — not made the structure of the source.
Without the premise, “God” can mean many things, and the word would name nearly all of them a second gesture or a second world. A God who becomes: history completes Him, the cross changes Him, suffering is the matter of glory. A God who “cannot do without you” sounds like love. It is degradation. He holds you so that He will not come apart.
A God of covenant, without a metaphysics of already closed fullness, can will, can repent in biblical speech, can be wounded by refusal. The word would accept the face and reject the void. Without fullness already given, the distinction is hard to guard. “I allowed” slides toward “I needed this in order to be who I am.”
A God as horizon, call, event — not substance. The prohibition against using can remain, but it is no longer the consequence of fullness. It is an ethics of revelation. Two falls: either the event sanctifies all that preceded it, or the prohibition remains a taste.
No divinity. Then only the below remains: the table, the dead, forgiveness, force that stops a blow. That is permitted. It is not the same thing as having a source. The test remains common: religions and atheisms fall by the same measure — the second reality they install when evidence costs.
With the premise, love without a price is a descended analogy. Without the premise, the same sentence is a rule of mutual recognition: the other is not the material of your fullness, though something is missing in you. The analogy breaks. The prohibition remains, poorer in ground, sometimes more honest about hunger. Below, nearly the whole moral program remains. Above, without fullness already given, “divinity” becomes either a partner who feeds on drama, or a process, or a name for an ethics, or a void.
Why it is hard to hold
Selection does not reward truth. It rewards what copies. A package of beliefs and gestures holds if it gathers people, extracts work, is handed to children, punishes betrayal, and often defeats another package. It need not be fullness. It must hold. A God who does not need you is hard to sell as binder. A God who requires you is easy. Whoever believes heaven is incomplete without his gesture comes. Whoever believes fullness is already all can also be absent. The group weakens. Selection does not forgive this weakness. It names it reserve. Dogma names it rent.
People learn from one another. They imitate prestige. They fear isolation. Over long ages a package has gathered: an eye that sees when no one is in the room; a punishment that works even unconfessed; a gesture that says “I am one of ours”; a border against those outside. That is not an argument for the package. It is the anatomy of its resistance.
Monitoring is expensive. In the village, the face holds. In the city, it does not. An eye that judges and wants worship makes conscience into police. “He needs you” is a useful fiction. It makes a person a piece of glory. Hell, sharp karma, exclusion that no longer closes need not be true in order to work. They need to be felt. For a group they are a device. Functional does not mean permitted.
Nothing binds more cheaply than a dangerous outside. “We” is born from contrast. Union bought with the enemy holds long enough to win a generation. The rotting is slow. The victory is immediate. “It had to hurt” is theodicy and it is glue. If the wound is only a wound, you can leave. If the wound is a step, you stay: you have already given, therefore it must have been true.
That is why the word is hard to hold. It asks for a God who does not use you, a hell that does not serve heaven, a group that does not lie in order to stand, a suffering that is not sanctified. The packages that have spread do the inverse. The piety cut here is not a logical mistake. It is a fruit of selection.
Below, without heaven, there remain facts that do not wait for dogma. Need of holding. Pain at rupture. Attachment that can make a face the regulator of the self. Whoever holds anxiously uses so as not to come apart. Whoever cuts so as not to depend has chosen non-touch. Need is proven. The prohibition is not. The prohibition remains a law, not a measurement.
The group defends its vision when evidence costs. The self is also “we.” What is made sacred is not changed by argument; it is defended. Rite, the seeing eye, the costly signal hold cooperation. The gathering that holds the first world is not the same as the gathering that holds only its own. Selection rewards the second. Dogma asks for the first.
After the blow, a story is sought. “It made me stronger,” “one sees why” come easily. Healing is not forbidden. Sanctifying the means is. Markets need not fill the void. It is enough to keep it awake and sell the dose. The institution that lives on recognition has an interest in not closing the lack.
Finitude is body. Hunger returns. Whoever turns finitude into spectacle-unfeeling has used his own cleanliness. Play and form hold without being, in themselves, a lie. The lie begins when form gives birth to a false belief as glue. To cut every form so that it will not resemble food is drying.
Science gives the anatomy of the cry. It does not give fullness. It shows why the market will reproduce the hungry god, useful hell, the enemy, and the wound-as-step: they hold groups. This holding is not a sign. It is pressure. Some laboratory stories are held too high. The thin effect, lifted, is a second storey in a new coat. Cutting every measurement so that it will not resemble food is drying.
Forbidden: to take the package’s success as a sign of fullness; to lift these facts into heaven; to make the thin effect into proof.
Permitted: to see why the package holds — and not to sanctify it; to hold below the anatomy of temptation; to weigh; not to lift; not to dry.
Two temptations, the same remainder
There are two ways of betraying fullness, and both present themselves as guard. One makes the gift into food: surrender of the will is glory, worship is an engine, heaven grows from the knee. The other, for fear of the first, cuts touch: it does not ask, does not call, does not delight in a face, lest it resemble lack. The first rents. The second dries. What follows is not a third religion. It is the remainder that can still be held when you have refused both.
From those who forbade the food of glory one may take the prohibition, not the distance. They knew that surrender of the will produces power — and therefore they cut it. A gift that serves the One who gives has ceased to be a gift. They did not ask worship as a liturgy that completes heaven. They did not lift the wound as a step. Freedom remained risk. Holding is not absorption. Novelty, if it is, is in the creature. When reality cost, some did not give birth to a false belief from which the other works. They descended. They made themselves word, tool, body, so as not to lie from above. Their form — table, city, argument, debate — held the world that is, not a Way. That is permitted. What is not permitted is the law that, so as not to become hunger, no longer looks at a face. Their silence was often an idol. The content they refused to lift was right. The way they emptied relation of will, of joy, and of name was not.
Whoever descends — word, tool, body — so as not to lie from above holds the prohibition with a face. Whoever remains above in order to remain clean has chosen non-touch.
From those who made thirst the law of the source one does not take the flame. One takes what remained below, before the warm word was turned into the structure of what holds. Truth is the beginning of the road — as a sentence about the first world, not as a password. Appearance is not a step; the spirit is not a mask. Do not seek wickedness in the neighbor in order to make his house the matter of your justice. Whoever has turned aside can be forgiven without a ticket to a second life. Whoever asks for bread asks with the mouth; the rock can give water without the source being hungry. Whoever learns to stand in the fall learns in the creature, not by repairing heaven. “We do not ask for blind faith” is permitted only as test. A way of mercy and return existed before thirst was lifted. That is all. The rest — the union that burns you if you do not give yourself, the glory that cannot do without you, the sanctified wound, the people as coin — is the forbidden of the first headings, only said plainly.
Whoever has seen that worship feeds is right to fear. That fear is not an argument for emptiness. Fullness is not guarded by no longer willing a particular. Freedom set above use is just. Set above mercy, it is a blade. Silence that does not lift the wound is permitted. Silence that leaves the wound without a name, so that it will not look like a step, is drying. Help that makes the one helped a step of the one who helps has broken the rule — not because help is bad, but because it made it rank. Form that holds the city, the table, the argument is not a Way. It becomes a Way when it gives birth to a false belief as binder. To cut form so that it will not look like cult is the other idol. To lift it is the first.
Warm speech is not a fault by being warm. It is a fault when it is lifted. Below, it is the language of finitude. Above, it is the law of the source. A way of mercy and return can be held without being the structure of what holds. Whoever turns the warm word into an ontology of the source has made thirst an idol. Whoever erases it so that it will not resemble lack has made fullness into non-touch. The thirst of the mouth is real. Lifted, it makes the source hungry and the neighbor bread. Refused as principle, it makes distance. You can ask. The rock can give water. You cannot claim that the asking completes what holds.
Forbidden: to take from those who did not use also their distance; to take from those who used also their hunger; to guard fullness like a watchman who no longer looks at a face; to erase thirst in order to stay clean.
Permitted: the prohibition of food, held with a face; the warm word, held below; the same prohibition, with will, with joy, with name.
What kind of person this word forms
It does not form a flock that comes because heaven is incomplete without it. It forms people who can be absent — and therefore can remain without paying with a lie.
A person with recognized hunger and without a title. He knows he is not fullness. He asks for bread, help, love. He does not turn the asking into a ticket over a face. He is less heroic than the piety of the void — “without me it collapses” — and less cold than the shop-window stoic. He is a creature who remains a creature.
A person of duration, not of climate. He remains at the table, at the dead, at the name, at the day. Not because form is magic. Because form holds the face. He can be silent in its time. He does not make silence a principle. He can cry out. He does not make the cry a law.
A person who does not rent his neighbor. The child is not proof that he has not lived in vain. The spouse is not the mirror that keeps him in being. The parishioner is not the matter of the sermon. The friend is not wages. He can want an answer and be refused without turning the wound into an argument that fullness was owed him through the other. Eros, work, parent — the same third way: touch that does not rent.
A person of the test. When reality costs, one sees what stands above truth. This word forms — if it forms — people who can bear losing the group, rank, rest, identity-as-immortality, before giving birth to a false belief from which the other works. It is not a guarantee of character. It is the direction of time it sets.
A person who buries without rewriting. At the bedside he says little: you are here, it hurts, I am not leaving, we keep the name. Not “it had to be.” That produces a narrow and sufficient mercy, not a metaphysics of consolation.
A person who can forgive without erasing. Guilt is a deed. Forgiveness is ceasing, not a ticket to a second life. Confession says what was. It does not buy the cleanliness of the image.
Here theology becomes a household rule, not a moral add-on. You are not fullness. You are hungry. The distinction does not ask you to mime fullness. It forbids you to make your lack a title over the face beside you.
Close
From those who did not want to feed: do not use. From those who fed and still kept a word before hunger: do not dry the word. Together they do not make a new cult. They make the boundary from the beginning, said once more, without names of offices: hold what is, without lifting it and without leaving it without form.
He does not need you. That is why He can hold you without using you. That is why He can will you. That is why He can delight. That is why He can call. That is why you are not allowed to make anyone a step — and not allowed to turn this prohibition into distance.
The rest is the temptation to invent a second gesture, a second world, a second face — His or yours — that would justify use.
Do not require forgetting. Do not sanctify the means. Do not make love the other’s duty toward your void. Do not confuse fullness with distance. Do not take answer for payment. Do not invent. Do not dry.
The person who adheres to this faith is not the convert who has discovered that he is necessary to heaven. He is the person who has accepted a boundary: fullness does not require him, therefore he is not allowed to claim anyone as a step. From this boundary everything is rebuilt — life, house, gathering, the name of God, prayer, science, the species, and the hierarchy of values.
He is a creature who remains a creature. He recognizes hunger, wear, attachment, and the fear of death, not only bodily death, but also failure, abandonment, forgetting. He does not sanctify them and does not deny them. He does not play plenitude and does not play shop-window stoicism. He asks for bread, help, and love, but does not turn the asking into a title over a face. He is a person of duration: he remains at the table, at the dead, at the name and the day, not because rite is magic, but because form holds the face. He can be absent from the group without coming apart, and therefore he can remain in the group without buying the union with a lie. He is a person of the test. When reality costs, one sees what stands above truth — fear, pride, group, rest, identity held as immortality. His adherence is not a door-password, but an ordering of time: patience instead of panic, holding instead of evasion, hope that does not install an adjoining room. Two falls are forbidden to him at once: making the other food, and no longer touching him in order to stay clean. The third way is the household rule: touch that does not rent.
Life, for him, is gift, not debt and not step. It could have not been. Once it is, it is held by the same gesture, not by a storey of repair. That is why life is not material of drama for heaven and not proof that it “was worth it.” House, work, children, and the measure placed in the hand are what is held, not the argument of existence. Finitude is not the enemy of fullness; it is the place where the gift can be received without being stolen as immortality. Suffering is texture: hunger returns, the body wears, the bond breaks. It is not an accident without a name and not a lesson of heaven. One fights without sanctifying the means. One loses without saying that the loss was a step. Healing, if it is, heals; it does not justify the wound. At the bedside the word is narrow: you are here, it hurts, I am not leaving, we keep the name. It does not say it was not, that it had to be, that one sees why, that it is better there. Hope installs duration, not an adjoining room. Play, feast without recruitment, the flower, friendship, and art stand as answer, not as immortality. Whoever will not allow them has added a duty. Whoever lifts them in order to cover death has made them masters.
Gathering is permitted as the body of a promise, not as a step. People, land, the stopped day, and descent can hold the memory of the world that is. They become idols when they give birth to a false belief as binder: the necessary enemy, inevitable history, the nation as immortality, the rule as the price of order. The Church is the most exposed case, not the only one. It can make need into liturgy, telling a person that heaven is incomplete without his gesture and then giving the gesture back as grace. It can also hold memory, body, name, and judgment without making them the price of glory. The test is the same for church, state, party, and guild: what stands above truth when reality costs. Union bought with fear or with a second reality rots. Force that stops a blow holds the first world. Force that gives birth to a false belief as binder makes the body a step of order. Mercy goes before the rule. Rule without mercy makes a person a step. Mercy without form does not hold. To entrust yourself is not to give yourself as matter; it is to remain a face, held, not used. He does not build his holiness from the neighbor’s guilt. Spectacle-justice makes its matter from the face beside. The word that serves the group against reality has chosen a master. The word that serves reality against the group must remain merciful; otherwise it has chosen cruelty as an inverse master. He can be absent. That is the sign that he is not a tenant of the group’s glory. Therefore he can remain without lying in order to stand.
God, in this faith, is complete. He does not become. He does not complete Himself through the world, worship, the cross, history, or your recognition. Creation is overflow, not debt. Holding is the same gesture, not a second storey. Relation can be real — will, joy, calling by name — without being food. The sentence “He cannot do without you” sounds like consolation and is a degradation: a God who cannot do without you no longer holds you; He uses you so that He will not come apart. Incarnation, if it is held, is free particularity, not the engine of fullness. The cross does not make Him, does not wake Him, does not add what He lacked. It can be the consequence of a real freedom in a world that is held. It cannot be the mystery of a divine lack. The wound is not lifted. One does not say “it had to be.” Hell is not a step of heaven. Warm speech — “I want you,” “your absence hurts me,” “return” — is held below, as the language of finitude or analogy, not as the structure of the source. Jealousy, weeping, and “I cannot do without” are faces of created attachment. You make them an idol when you claim that fullness is built the same way. Without the premise, the below still remains: the table, the dead, forgiveness, force that stops a blow. That is permitted. It is not the same thing as having a source. The person of this faith knows the distinction and does not counterfeit it.
Spirituality is not an inner world easier to carry. To believe means not inventing a second reality in order to escape the first, and remaining in the first long enough to love it. Prayer, praise, the cry, and bowing are answer, not payment. You can praise without filling. You can cry out without waking a lack. When answer is made a step, it has become food. Asceticism is the small death of self-defense, not the spectacle of holiness. Spectacle-holiness is a new master. Whoever despises the body in order to appear spirit has used his own cleanliness. Whoever does not touch himself has chosen cleanliness as master. Not feeding on your own non-use is the same law. Truth is the beginning of the way, not the group’s password. Blind faith is not asked. Fullness does not require blindness; hunger does. Miracle is not ground. Silence in its time, mercy, and justice that do not evade one another are faces of truth. If care always postpones, care is evasion. If the cutting does not stop before the body, the prohibition has become empty asceticism. Forgiveness is not a ticket of erasure. Confession does not buy a second life. Wandering held as wound can be unbound. Wandering sanctified as a step of the Way has lied twice.
Science gives the anatomy of the cry. It does not give fullness. It shows why markets and groups reproduce the hungry god, useful hell, the enemy, and the wound-as-step: they hold cooperation, extract work, are handed to children. This holding is not a sign of truth. It is selection pressure. The package’s success is not proof of fullness. This person weighs without lifting and without drying. He does not make the laboratory effect a second storey. He does not cut every measurement so that it will not resemble food. He does not take “this is how the group works” for “this is how heaven must be.” The test remains public: what breaks in face, in word, and in gathering when you set something else above truth. Religions and atheisms stand under the same measure. Doctrines are not ranked here; what is recognized is the relation to the first world. A good atheism is responsibility without a guarantee from above: to bury, to forgive, to hold the community, without lying consolation. A bad atheism invents a second world as well. A bad theism is full of the second gesture. A good theism holds fullness and the particular.
A person is not the price of glory. Freedom is real precisely because the gift does not serve the source as a means. You can consent, refuse, wander, remain. The risk was not already consumed like a play with an innocent ending. Evil can be permitted without being necessary to God. Fullness does not need a wound; created freedom can still wound. The two sentences stand together. If you pull them apart, either you make evil a step of heaven, or you make man a shadow. Humanity is particular: body, memory, name, face. A theism that holds fullness without the particular has chosen non-touch. A theism that holds the particular as a step of fullness has chosen the idol. The face is not a step of the image. The child held as presence is not the child held as proof. The spouse loved as a face is not the mirror that keeps you in being. Another’s suffering looked at is not the step of your depth. The thirst of the mouth is real; it is not a title over a face. Species, nation, idea, and the unstained self are not lies in themselves. They become idols when the hidden aim is to keep us from the fact that we are mortal.
Values are not a catalogue of virtues. They are the consequence of a boundary. At the center stand fullness that does not feed, gift that is not debt, holding that is not use, and truth as beginning, not as password. From here follow the prohibitions: not to make of God a void that requires you, not to make evil necessary to Him, not to read incarnation and the cross as the filling of a lack, not to give birth to a false belief as a means, not to make of the neighbor your step, not to buy union with a second reality, not to make answer into coin, not to sanctify suffering, not to require forgetting as the price of peace, not to take distance for purity, and not to take the package’s success as a sign of truth. From here follow also the permissions, held below: will, joy, and calling by name, which are not void; freedom as risk; real beginnings in the world that is held; the particular held as far as light, without rewriting the wound; silence, mercy, and justice that do not evade; love without asking the other to fill your void; the gathering that holds the first world; praise, table, place, and memory; the cry in its time, play, and care; the warm word held below; to ask, to receive, and to hold without a ticket; to want, to be refused, and to remain.
When they collide, the first world stands above the invented one. The face stands above the image. Truth stands above the group. Mercy stands before the rule, but does not cancel it. The wound stands as wound, not as step. Answer stands as gift, not as wages. Form holds, but is not a Way. The characteristic virtue is not the heroism of the void and not the coldness of non-touch. It is the capacity to be absent and, precisely therefore, to remain without paying with a lie. It is narrow and sufficient mercy. It is fidelity to what is, without lifting it and without leaving it without form.
The rest is the temptation to invent a second gesture, a second world, a second face — His or yours — that would justify use.
