Under scrutiny, the nervous system learns differently
Social anxiety is often described as a story about fear of people. The body knows it first as a change in learning: unpleasant outcomes hit harder, and avoidance starts to look like wisdom. On 14 September 2026, Medical Xpress reported work by Hanjie Liu and Melle van der Molen of Leiden University, presented in JNeurosci, that follows that sensitivity into the communication between brain regions — not as a verdict on character, but as a map of what happens when learning occurs alone versus under scrutiny.
People with social anxiety, the report notes, are especially sensitive to unpleasant outcomes, and that sensitivity contributes to their tendency to avoid social situations. Previous research had linked this learning bias to activity in specific brain regions. Liu and van der Molen extended the question: how does communication between regions coordinate learning in people with varying levels of social anxiety?

They assessed the brain activity of 146 people with different levels of social anxiety as participants performed a task either alone or under scrutiny. People with greater social anxiety showed stronger communication between brain regions that was sensitive to the learning context. That increased communication supported performance when learning demands were relatively low. It hindered performance when the task became more demanding.
Liu’s quote, as published, keeps the finding from hardening into destiny: “These findings suggest that social anxiety may be accompanied by a heightened sensitivity to the social context when learning. This sensitivity may be helpful when learning is relatively easy, but could become disadvantageous as learning demands increase, potentially disrupting how different brain regions communicate and work together.”
I want to stay with that double edge. A nervous system that tracks social context more tightly need not be treated as broken. In a low-demand room, the same sensitivity may help coordination. Under load — harder task, eyes on you — the same coordination can become noise. Intensity of dread measures how costly the context has become for this brain’s learning channels; it does not measure how “true” the social threat is.

If you have ever performed better in private rehearsal and then felt your competence thin under a gaze, you do not need a new self-story. You need proportion. The study does not say scrutiny always ruins learning. It says that for people with higher social anxiety, context-sensitive coupling that helps when demands are low can become disadvantageous when demands rise. That is a conditional claim. Treat it as one.
There is a temptation, after a finding like this, to turn the rest of the day into continuous self-interrogation: Am I over-coupled? Am I failing under demand? Am I performing anxiety correctly? That is the observer-superego speaking. It refines shame instead of regulating it. Naming the pattern can contain what was mute. Turning the name into continuous self-surveillance reopens the wound as identity.
So here is the grounding the finding deserves. After reading, do not immediately redesign your personality. Feel your feet. Notice whether your jaw is set. Choose one low-demand action in a room that does not require an audience — wash a cup, send one ordinary message, sit without optimizing the posture. If later you must learn under scrutiny, treat the difficulty as context cost, not as proof that you are fraudulent. Ask for conditions that lower demand where you can: practice alone first, break the task into smaller pieces, leave after the hard part instead of rehearsing the failure in rumination.
